 About us

King Louis and the Primas band

Dave Batchelor - trombone and vocals. A showbiz career that goes back to the New Vaudeville Band (Winchester Cathedral - remember?) was interrupted by 30 years working for the BBC. He's now playing more than he ever did - in the Scottish Swing Orchestra, The Batchelors of Jazz and Jazz Bar Big Band among many others.

Ed Kelly - bass The number one choice for the discerning jazz musician in the east of Scotland. Played and plays with everyone.

Alastair Morrow - drums He holds down the drum chair in the Fat Sam Band as well as with the Primas but his claim to fame is creating the ceilidh band with the best name in showbiz. Ceilidh Minogue. (say it out loud)

Campbell Normand - piano Resident at Whighams Jazz Club, he backs all the acts that appear.

Hamish McGregor - sax/vocals The eponymous leader of the Fat Sam Band for more than quarter of a century and an icon of Edinburgh jazz for almost twice that. Trad, Dixieland, jump jive and swing - they're all grist to the McGregor mill.

Colin Steele - Trumpet. He created the most successful fusion of jazz and Scottish music and the CDs he recorded with his quintet won every UK jazz plaudit. He plays Latin, funk and dance, and is involved in music based theatre. The finest trumpeter in Scottish jazz.

Ross Milligan - Guitar. A master of a variety of guitar styles from jazz, through rock and roll to funk and an inspirer of young guitarists throughout the borders.

Fraser Spiers - Harmonica. A man who has played with everyone from Paolo Nutini to Carol Kidd. Fraser has played on more albums than most people even own!

Special guests:

Paul Harrison - Piano. He's in demand to play with almost everyone in Scottish jazz - including Kevin Mackenzie and Phil Bancroft - but his own projects, across a huge range of jazz styles, create a stir in the jazz world. Breach, Trianglehead and the Hospitalfield project are among the most creative in the country.

Steve Hamilton - Piano. He's in demand from almost everyone in Scottish and World jazz. Has played with all the greats from John Schoefield to Pee Wee Ellis and currently tours with the great drummer Billy Cobham.

Duncan Findlay - Guitar. Duncan has been Scotland's top session guitarist for many years playing with all the greats in pop and jazz.
